Wines of Germany

Oct-Nov 2000

93 Prinz von Hessen 1999 Winkeler Hasensprung Gheingau, Riesling Spätlese
Fabulous – silky smooth, expansive, medium bodied, apricot, peach nectar, moderate spice and a long satisfying finish. Perfectly balanced and sweet enough that it can be served with pound cake, candied walnuts, or enjoyed all by itself.

92 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 1999 Josephshöfer Riesling Spätlese
Sweet, floral, cinnamon; medium bodied, bright and spicy, long and complex. Very special.

91 Baron zu Knyphausen 1999 Kiedricher Sandgrub Rheingau, Riesling Spätlese
A complete, complex wine with layers of fruit like lime, apricot and bosc pear, light body, crisp acidity and a gorgeous finish.

91 Schloss Johannisberger 1999, Rheingau, Riesling Rotlack Kabinett
Floral and fruity, the Schloss Johannisberger is a dry, multi-faceted Riesling loaded with tart green apple fruit and mineral notes. What taste descriptions cannot convey is the amazing complexity of this wine.

90 Von Schubert, Maximin Grünhäuser 1999, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling
An amazing wine that elegantly combines elements that elsewhere might clash: Mint, fennel, apple and citrus. Moderately sweet with crisp acidity and good length.

90 Grans-Fassian 1999 Trittenheimer Alarchen,, Riesling Kabinett
Like the most impossibly ripe apple, with an edge of apricot and citrus, broad and barely sweet, aromatic, slightly spritzy, medium-bodied and altogether inviting. Hints of honey and mineral surface in the nose and the finish. Classy.

89 to 90 Dr. H. Thanisch 1998, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett
If you can imagine a sweet green apple flavor coupled with celery, you’d have a good idea of how this wine tastes. Harder to convey is its clean, balanced character.

89 Graff 1999 Graacher Himmelreich Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Kabinett
Not shy or retiring, this beauty is slightly sweet with an aromatic nose of tart apples and hemp rope, light spice and a tart finish. Nicely structured and eminently drinkable. Good value.

89 Schloss Saarstein 1999 Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling
There is an ineffable quality about this wine that immediately transports you into the cellars of the estate; it simply reeks of "Place." Slatey, fruity (apple and apricot), sweet yet crisp, this wine declares its pedigree.

88 to 89 Schloss Castell 1999 Kerner
Intensely floral with a nose reminiscent of magnolia, just off-dry, spritzy and full of peachy fruit flavors. Light, clean and zesty. First rate.

88 Schloss Castell 1999 Müller-Thurgau
Consistently among the best Muller-Thurgaus available, Schloss Castel’s is a dry version with light body and lots of apple fruit. Beautifully balanced, light and refreshing, with a pleasant mineral and fruit finish.

88 Basserman 1999, Pfalz, Forster Riesling Kabinett
A fine, penetrating Riesling that offers intense fruit flavors and mineral notes, as well as mouthwatering sweetness, all balanced by crisp acidity and a bit of spritz. Powerful finish. Serve with equally flavorful foods like stroganoff, or sausage with sauerkraut.

87 Basserman 1999, Estate Trocken Riesling
A fine, dry Riesling with bright Granny Smith apple and mineral character from the nose through the finish. A great quaff for a fall picnic or in front of the fire.

87 Schloss Johannisberger 1999, Rheingau, Vogelsang Riesling Kabinett
Slightly sweet and spritzy, with good balancing acidity, this is a perfect aperitif– zesty, with a floral nose that comes at you in waves, and flavors of honeysuckle and apricot. A real crowd-pleaser.

87 Schloss Saarstein 1999 Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Spätlese
Layered fruit – penetrating honey and bosc pear with a hint of vegetal character, full-bodied and sweet. Big and ripe, best suited to the aperitif or dessert course.

87 S.A. Prum 1999 Graacher Himmelreich Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Spätlese
Honey, apricot, full-bodied and sweet with good balancing acidity and a hint of botrytis. Serve with the cheese course.

85 Baron zu Knyphausen 1999, Rheingau, Riesling
Honeysuckle aromas and flavors in a medium-bodied Riesling with a touch of sweet spice character and threshold residual sweetness on the palate. Nice aperitif.

85 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 1999 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Kabinett
Mildly sweet appley fruit, spritzy and very well-balanced, it seems almost dry on the mid-palate. The finish is a bit short, but otherwise this is a nicely made wine.

85 Valckenberg 1999, Pfalz, Gewurztraminer
Excellent varietal definition – lychee nuts character with balancing elements of sweetness, bitterness and dryness. Angular. Interesting. Serve chilled with ginger scented dishes.

84 Salm, Schloss Wallhausen 1999, Nahe, Riesling
Light and fruity (apple and citrus), moderately sweet and crisp, a fairly intense mouthwatering wine that would serve best as an aperitif.

84 Baron von Heyl 1999, Freiherr Heyl Zu Herrnsheim, Riesling
On the threshold between dry and barely sweet, the fruit in this Riesling is more prominent on the palate than in the nose, and it has a mouthwatering apple-pear flavor that lingers for a while. Good as an aperitif or with chicken or pork.

84 Graff 1999 Ürziger Würzgarten Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Spätlese
Ripe apple and light celery, light and clean, slightly sweet with light balancing bitterness and good acidity.

83 PJV 1998 Wormser Liebrauenstift-Kirchestuck, Trocken Riesling
A bone dry Riesling with a lot of mineral character, a bit austere on the mid-palate, but with a pleasant nose and long minerally finish. A good wine to pair with seafood drizzled with lemon juice.

83 Graff 1999 Piesporter Michelsberg Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Auslese
Sweet apple and mint, light and clean, simple and fun.

83 Freiherr Heyl Zu Herrnsheim 1999, Nierstein, Riesling Kabinett
Medium-bodied, and spritzy, with sweet apple-like fruit and mineral notes. Pleasant, if blocky, this is a good aperitif if served well-chilled.

82 Dr. L, Loosen Bros. 1999, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling
Like sweet apple juice with pleasant acidity. A nice quaff with lots of fruit and intensity, but quite simple at the same time.

81 Graff 1999 Erdener Treppchen Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Riesling Spätlese
Full-bodied, quite sweet, apple and citrus fruit. Decent balance, though simple. A pleasant quaff if chilled.
